A number of exciting developments continue concerning the Archives and its related projects. So far in 2005 alone:

  • The Archives web site premiered in June, here at www.IowaBroadcasting.com.

  • Hundreds of electronic transcription discs dating to the 1930s and hundreds more reel-to-reel tapes were donated to the Archives by legendary Des Moines radio station WHO in May. This includes many wartime broadcasts by Jack Shelley and Herb Plambeck, and hundreds of sporting events called by Jim Zabel.

  • KWWL-TV in Waterloo donated hundreds of video tapes and cans of film dating back to the middle 1970s, including special programs, sporting events, and news reports.

  • Broadcasting hall of famer Grant Price announced a bequest to Wartburg College valued at $2 million, part of which will go to support the Archives.

  • The R.J. McElroy Trust board of trustees authorized a grant to support production of a video documentary and book concerning the history of the Black Hawk Broadcasting Company. The project is now underway, and is expected to be completed in 2007.

  • The Archives of Iowa Broadcasting National Advisory Board held its second organizational meeting in March.

  • A team of student interns began work to help collect and catalog items, thanks to a pilot project funded by the R.J. McElroy Trust. Four students worked in winter and May 2005; another four are expected to work during the summer; with another two-four students to continue work in the fall.
